What Is an Extended Car Warranty?

An extended car warranty is a service agreement that reimburses the vehicle owner for specific automotive repairs and other incidents, like towing, rental cars during repairs and trip interruptions. Ultimately, the benefit of an extended car warranty is twofold:

  • They help lower the overall cost of car maintenance
  • They help cover the costs related to surprise breakdowns, wherever they occur

Extended car warranties can be purchased throughout a vehicle’s lifespan. Costs and coverage options vary, based on the provider, plan and factors such as vehicle make, model, age and mileage.

If you consider the cost of an unexpected breakdown, paying for an extended car warranty might be worth the monthly investment, especially with a lower-mileage vehicle that has a lower plan fee.

Most warranty companies do not require an inspection, which is why most have waiting periods with new policies. They want to make sure they are not being asked to pay for an issue that existed before coverage was purchased.

In many cases, yes. If it’s a failure related to an internally lubricated engine component, most powertrain coverage plans include it. Make sure you keep up on your maintenance however, because if you’ve failed to change the oil for many thousands of miles or do any of the routine maintenance, it could lead to a denial of coverage.

Components like tires, brakes and windshield wipers are considered “wear items,” which means they’re designed to wear as they are used. Warranties don’t cover these things because they would drastically increase the costs of covering a car.
