High or Erratic Engine RPMs
The vacuum leak releases excess air into the engine either steadily or in spurts. Your tachometer needle will reflect the leak by either registering too high all the time or bouncing up and down, respectively. This is because when the vacuum pressure is released into the engine, it increases the RPMs.
Hissing or Suction Noises
You may also hear hissing or suction noises coming from the engine if the engine has a vacuum leak. Generally, the former means that the vacuum leak is a minor one and the latter means that the vacuum leak is a major one. Check Engine Warning
As the excess air is released into the engine, system sensors will report error codes to the engine control module. When this happens, the module tries to resolve the problem itself. In the case of a vacuum leak, the module is unable to do so and will turn on the check engine light to warn you that there is a problem in the engine. The check engine light will remain illuminated until you have the vacuum leak repaired.
Engine Power Loss/Lag
Unfortunately, as the engine fills with air, you will notice that the engine will lag and lose power. This is because the vacuum leak is causing a lean fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. Consequently, there will be more air than fuel in the mix and your acceleration and engine performance will suffer.
Reduced Fuel Economy
As the engine uses more fuel in an effort to produce power, you will notice a reduction in your vehicle’s fuel economy until you get the vacuum leak fixed. Again, this is indirectly being caused by too much air in the engine flowing out of the leaking vacuum hose.
