The mass airflow (MAF) sensor provides critical information to the engine control unit – the main computer chip – about the outside airflow into the engine. The ECU, as the main computer chip is also called, uses the data provided by the MAF sensor to determine how much air is needed in the combustion chamber for efficient engine combustion. HQ Autosport advises that if the MAF sensor is dirty and sends incorrect data to the ECU, you may have one or more of the following problems.
Black Exhaust Smoke
When the ECU makes adjustments to air and fuel in the combustion chamber that create a rich fuel mixture, you may end up with black exhaust flowing out of the tailpipe. The ECU may mistakenly add fuel to the mixture when it doesn’t need it because of the faulty MAF sensor’s skewed data.
Hard Starts or No Starts
This can make starting your car, truck, or C/SUV difficult, especially if the engine is flooded. Too much air, which creates a lean fuel mixture, can also create starting problems. You need the right amount of air and fuel in the combustion chamber for your vehicle to fire up seamlessly.
Performance Problems
You may also end up with engine performance problems such as surging or sputtering if the combustion chamber has an imbalance of air and fuel. Unfortunately, you will continue to have these engine performance problems until the MAF sensor is cleaned or replaced.
Rough Engine Idle
One such performance problem is a rough engine idle. While you are sitting at an idle, your engine will sputter and struggle to run. In severe cases, the engine might even stall until you are moving again. Unfortunately, a malfunctioning MAF sensor can cause these conditions in the engine.
Sluggish Acceleration
Another engine performance problem related to a bad MAF sensor is sluggish acceleration. If the fuel mixture in the combustion chamber is lean, your engine will struggle when you press down on the accelerator. You may find it difficult to pick up speed.
Reduced Fuel Economy
All of these things will reduce your automobile’s fuel economy because the engine is not running efficiently. When this happens, you’ll find yourself with a need to fill the gas tank more often. Who would’ve thought a dirty MAF sensor could cause so much trouble?
HQ Autosport is the best auto service shop in Escondido, CA, and we’d be happy to inspect and clean your MAF sensor if it is dirty and malfunctioning. If the sensor needs to be replaced, we can do that. Call us today for an appointment.
